DETROIT -- Three people were injured when a train and a tractor-trailer collided in southwest Detroit early Friday morning. The collision happened near Schaefer Highway and Greenfield Road near the Detroit and Melvindale border. The train had 35 cars attached behind it and was carrying more than 3,000 gallons of fuel. The crash destroyed the truck and caused the train to fall off the track and land on its side."He said that the truck driver ran right through the light and the rail and just ran into him," said the conductor's Tim William's wife, Noel.
The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital but was not seriously injured. Two of the train conductors were also taken to the hospital for precautionary measures."I'm just glad he's alive and he's going to be okay because looking at this, it could have been a lot worse," said Williams.
The truck driver, who is from Alco Steel, told police he did not see any warning lights from the train.Officials with the railroad said they believe the warning lights were working."Our train crew was interviewed and they said that the that the lights were working properly. We will run diagnostic tests on that device later today to confirm that,"said Rudy Husband, Norfolk and Southern Railroad Spokesman.
